Basement & foundation sales recruiting

Hire basement and foundation inspectors who diagnose the problem and close the repair.

Level helps basement waterproofing and foundation repair companies hire field inspectors (the sales role) who turn more inspections into signed repairs, and the sales managers who lead them. We check each rep's close-rate history, pay history and references before you meet them.Foundation InspectorsSales Managers

How we screen

How we screen waterproofing sellers

Before a rep reaches your shortlist, we check three things: close-rate history, pay history and references. Your interview time goes on sellers whose numbers hold up.
01Verified

Close-rate history

Close rate on company-generated inspections, with how they were counted: every inspection run, or only those where the decision-makers were home. We verify the history and how it was counted, so you can compare inspectors fairly.

02Verified

Pay history

Pay history from commission statements or W-2s, including the training period. If a rep left a big company after training, the statements show whether they ever reached full commission.

References

We run reference checks to confirm the history and track record the rep gave us, so you can interview with confidence.

For your interviews: our advice

Steps worth running yourself

Our checks confirm the numbers. Your interviews show you how a rep sells and whether they fit your team. We don’t run role-plays, ride-alongs or trial days, but they’re well worth your time. Here’s what we’d look for.

  • Take them into a wet basement, real or described, and ask them to explain the cause as if you were the homeowner. In this trade the diagnosis is the presentation.
  • Ask how they handle the homeowner who wants the cheapest fix. Good inspectors lay out the options plainly, without scare tactics, and still recommend what the house needs.
  • Ask about cancels. Signed in-home jobs can be cancelled for 3 business days under the FTC rule, and a scared homeowner who felt pushed is the one who cancels.

Pay plans

How waterproofing companies pay inspectors

Published pay plans for this trade are scarce. What one large company's posting showed:
  • Training pay, then commission

One large waterproofing company's posting paid $750/week during a mandatory training class, with company-generated leads and no cold calling. The same posting made much larger earnings claims; those are the company's own.

  • Base plus commission

A base gets experienced sellers from other trades through the months it takes to learn diagnosis. Decide up front when the base steps down and what the inspector has to sell to replace it.

See home improvement commission structures for plan types and worked examples.

Pay reality

What waterproofing sales reps earn, per BLS

BLS groups foundation and waterproofing contractors with exterior contractors. W-2 sales reps there, May 2025:
  • Sales reps at foundation, structure and exterior contractors

    NAICS 2381 · May 2025

    10th percentile
    $37,700
    Median
    $69,990
    90th percentile
    $136,100

Read this before you quote the table

BLS counts W-2 employees only. Reps paid on a 1099 are left out, so the top of the market runs higher than this table. Job postings show what an employer advertised, not what anyone earned.

When to hire

When to add an inspector

When inspections get pushed out because nobody is free to run them, the leads go cold. A homeowner with water on the floor calls the next company.

Expect a training period. The big companies run multi-week training before new inspectors go out alone, because diagnosis takes time to learn. Hire before the backlog builds, so your new inspector is ready when the leads are.

Foundation and waterproofing inspector

Owner, basement waterproofing and foundation repair company · St. Louis, MO

A waterproofing company's inspections were booked out two weeks after a wet spring, and homeowners were calling competitors.

We headhunted an inspector with 5 years at a large foundation repair company, known for explaining problems plainly and a low cancel rate.

Because he already knew diagnosis, he was running inspections alone after a short product training, and the backlog cleared within two months.

FAQ

Hiring waterproofing sales reps: questions owners ask.

  • Is a foundation inspector a sales job?

Yes. It's an in-home sales role: the inspector diagnoses the problem and sells the repair. One large company posts it as outside sales and calls it a field inspector internally.

  • What do basement waterproofing sales reps earn?

BLS doesn't publish a waterproofing-only figure. Sales reps at foundation, structure and exterior contractors earn a median $69,990 on W-2 payrolls. Company earnings claims in job postings are what employers advertise, not what reps earned.

  • Where do good inspectors come from?

First from other waterproofing and foundation companies. The inspectors with the best track records are usually employed and doing well, so we headhunt them at the strongest companies in your market. After that, from other inspection-led sales, like pest control, roofing and home inspection, where reps already diagnose before they sell. One large company's posting preferred 1-2 years of sales experience, with commission, B2C or in-home experience a plus.

  • Do inspectors need construction experience?

Not necessarily. The posting above listed sales, B2C and in-home experience as the pluses, not construction. You can teach diagnosis to a good seller if your training is solid.

  • How do you check an inspector's numbers?

We verify their close-rate history, check pay history using commission statements or W-2s and run reference checks to confirm their track record. Ride-alongs and role-plays are yours to run; the interview tips above cover what to look for.

  • How fast can you fill an inspector seat?

We aim to have a first candidate in front of you within 7 days of onboarding and getting your job description. A typical hire takes 21 days. Both vary by role and market, and on how much training you provide in-house.
