The roles

Who we recruit for roofing and siding companies

Titles vary: the same job gets posted as sales rep, estimator, consultant or inspector. We look past the title to what the person does on the roof and at the table.

What good looks like in roofing and siding

No one publishes a roofing or siding target sheet. These are the closest numbers on close rates, pay and staffing.

Pay plans

How roofing and siding companies pay sales reps

  • Percent of gross

10% of gross is the most common plan. Advised cap on total commission: Under 12% of gross. Start rookies lower, around 7%.

  • Percent of contract or profit

Common ranges run 7-12% of contract, or 30-50% of profit. Paying on profit protects your margin, but only works if your job costing is honest and on time.

  • 10/50/50

10% off the top for overhead, then net profit split 50/50 with the rep, about 10-20% of the job. More on steep, cut-up roofs. Suits storm work better than retail.

When to hire

Hire before hail season, not during it

Hail season runs March to August. The reps you hire in winter are the ones selling when the first hail hits.

Hail season: Omni Online Strategies

  • Busy seasonSpringHail peaks April to June. Unrun inspections are roofs someone else signs.
  • Busy seasonSummerStorm work runs through August. Every rep you're short is doors nobody knocks.
  • Slow seasonFallTime to learn your retail process and price book.
  • Slow seasonWinterIf installs slow in your winters, get a new rep through your price book now, so they're selling when the first hail hits.

Multi-location & private equity

One hiring standard across every branch.

Acquisitions add territories faster than branch managers can staff them. Level runs the same checks, close rate, pay history and references, on every seat in every market, so a rep in Phoenix clears the same bar as a rep in Charlotte.

FAQ

Hiring roofing and siding sales reps: questions owners ask.

  • Do you recruit retail or storm roofing reps?

Both, and they're different hires. Retail reps sell on product, financing and trust. Storm reps work insurance claims: doors after hail, adjuster meetings, supplements, high volume. Tell us which you sell.

  • Should roofing reps be W-2 or 1099?

Your call, made with your accountant. For context, 93% of roofing sales leaders surveyed in 2024 said they'd moved reps from 1099 to W-2. Either way, the rep is hired directly by your company.

  • What's a fair commission for a roofing sales rep?

10% of gross is the most common plan. Common ranges are 7-12% of contract, or 30-50% of profit. Advised cap on total commission: Under 12% of gross.

  • Is a roofing estimator the same job as a sales rep?

Usually, yes. In most roofing companies the estimator inspects, prices and asks for the sale. Some only measure and price, so our first question is whether the seat closes. Don't set pay off the government's cost estimator numbers ($80,330 median). That's a takeoff job, not a sales job.

  • One-call close or measure and come back?

Either works, and it changes who you hire. A one-call rep runs the full presentation, measures right, handles price and leaves with a signed contract, without pressure. If you measure first and come back with a price, you need someone patient and organized on follow-up. Tell us which you run.

  • How do cancels affect what a siding rep earns?

Homeowners can usually cancel a sale signed at home within 3 business days. If you pay commission before that window closes, decide up front whether cancels get charged back, and put it in the offer letter.

  • Do you place canvassers?

Yes, door knockers who book inspections for your closers. Pay is often per appointment and per sale. One posting offered $50 per appointment + $150 per sale.

  • How fast can you fill a roofing or siding sales seat?

We aim to have a first candidate in front of you within 7 days of onboarding and getting your job description. A typical hire takes 21 days. Both vary by role and market. Hiring in March for a storm market is a different search from hiring in November for retail.
