Writing the ad

Make it pull closers, not just applicants.

Proven sellers read a job ad the way they read a lead sheet. These are the lines they look for.
  1. 01

Put the pay per appointment up top

Canvassers compare offers on it. One roofing posting advertises $50 per appointment + $150 per sale. Say what you pay and when an appointment counts: booked, or sat.

  2. 02

    Say "no selling"

Plenty of people who'd be good at the door don't want to close. Make it clear the job is the appointment.

  3. 03

    Show the path to closing

If some of your reps started as canvassers, say so, and say how long it took. It's the best recruiting line you have for this seat.

  4. 04

    Say W-2 or 1099

BLS counts only 2,760 door-to-door sales workers on W-2 payrolls, which suggests most canvassers are paid as 1099 contractors (our reading). Whichever you use, be upfront about it.

  5. 05

    Hire ahead of the season

In Hail Alley, hail season runs March to August. Hire and train before it starts, not after the first storm.

Before you make an offer, ask for commission statements or W-2s, and run your own ride-along or role-play. Those are your checks, as the employer. When Level fills a seat, we verify close-rate history and pay history and check references before you meet anyone.

Licensing and compliance

Rules worth knowing before you post.

Only rules we could check at the source are listed. This isn't legal advice; check the rules where you sell.
  • Florida §489.147 restricts roof-claim solicitation and bans inducements such as gift cards, rebates and deductible waivers. Fines: Up to $10,000 per violation. Canvasser scripts and door hangers have to stay inside it.
  • Check whether your city or county requires a solicitor permit before canvassers start knocking.

FAQ

Hiring a canvasser: common questions.

  • How are canvassers paid?

Usually some mix of hourly pay, a bonus per appointment and a bonus per sale. One roofing posting advertises $50 per appointment + $150 per sale. Say what counts as an appointment: booked, or sat.

  • Is a canvasser the same as an appointment setter?

No. A canvasser books appointments face to face at the door. An appointment setter books them by phone. Level places field roles only, so canvassers yes, phone setters no.

  • Do canvassers need a permit?

It depends on the town, so check whether your city or county requires a solicitor permit. In Florida, roof-claim solicitation is also restricted under §489.147, with fines Up to $10,000 per violation.
