Siding sales recruiting

Hire siding consultants who walk the house, price the job and sign it on the same visit.

Level helps siding companies hire in-home consultants, sales estimators, canvassers and sales managers who sign more of the estimates they run. We headhunt proven exterior sellers and check every rep's close-rate history, pay history and references before you meet them.In-Home Sales ConsultantsSales EstimatorsCanvassersSales Managers

Benchmarks

What good looks like in siding

There's no siding-only sales benchmark we'd trust yet. Here's what is published and close enough to use.
MetricFigure
In-home close rate, all trades in Siro's sample (Level verifies each rep’s own number)
26.9%
Close rate, windows & doors (Siro publishes no siding figure) (Level verifies each rep’s own number)
29.1%
Typical commission, home improvement (dated) (Level verifies each rep’s own number)
6-12% of the sale

We verify each rep’s own number on these before you meet them, from their close-rate history and pay history, and confirm it with reference checks.

Siro counts a visit as a close when it moved toward a sale, not only signed contracts. There's no standard definition of close rate (No standard), so ask every rep what theirs is counted from.

How we screen

How we screen siding sellers

Before a rep reaches your shortlist, we check three things: close-rate history, pay history and references. Your interview time goes on sellers whose numbers hold up.
01Verified

Close-rate history

Close rate on issued leads, and how their last company issued them: confirmed homeowner appointments, or every lead that came in. For example, a rep closing 35% of pre-qualified appointments might close 20% of raw leads. We verify the history and the basis behind it, and we look for a strong close rate together with a low cancel rate. That's the rep who makes you money.

02Verified

Pay history

Pay history from commission statements or W-2s. Statements can show chargebacks too, which tells you a lot about how many of a rep's sales stick.

03Verified

References

We run reference checks to confirm the history and track record the rep gave us, so you can interview with confidence.

For your interviews: our advice

Steps worth running yourself

Our checks confirm the numbers. Your interviews show you how a rep sells and whether they fit your team. We don’t run role-plays, ride-alongs or trial days, but they’re well worth your time. Here’s what we’d look for.

  • Role-play the homeowner who wants to think about it. Give them a three-tier siding job and listen for options and a real reason to decide tonight that isn't pressure.
  • Ask what they do in the days after a signing. Most sales signed in the home can be cancelled within 3 business days under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule. High-pressure closers cost you twice, in cancels and in reviews. A rep who calls back keeps the job.
  • Ask them to measure a wall and talk you through waste, trim and tear-off. A siding seller who can't price it right sells jobs that don't make money.

Pay plans

How siding companies pay sales reps

The published picture for siding is the home improvement one: a percentage of the sale, sometimes with a base or a draw during the ramp.
  • Percent of sale

Home improvement commissions typically run 6-12% of the sale, depending on the product, lead quality and how much sales support the company gives (Pro Remodeler, 2018; an older figure, so use it as a range).

  • Draw against commission

An advance on commission the rep hasn't earned yet, paid back out of future commission. It keeps a new rep afloat through the first months. How a draw works.

See home improvement commission structures for worked examples, or model a plan in the commission calculator.

Pay reality

What siding sales reps earn, per BLS

Siding contractors sit in BLS's foundation, structure and exterior group, with roofers. W-2 sales reps there, May 2025:
  • Sales reps at foundation, structure and exterior contractors

    NAICS 2381 · May 2025

    10th percentile
    $37,700
    Median
    $69,990
    90th percentile
    $136,100

Read this before you quote the table

BLS counts W-2 employees only. Reps paid on a 1099 are left out, so the top of the market runs higher than this table. Job postings show what an employer advertised, not what anyone earned.

When to hire

When to add a siding rep

Remodelers Advantage puts first sales for a new home improvement salesperson at 3-6 months, with full productivity at 6-12 months. Plan your cash around that ramp before you hire.

Hire when estimates start getting pushed out because the owner or your one estimator is running every appointment. A homeowner left waiting for a price has time to get two more.

Seasonality

Hiring around the install season

We haven't found reliable published data on when siding companies hire, so we haven't drawn up a calendar. Our advice: if installs slow in your winters, the slow months are the best time to bring a rep on and get them through your product and price book before spring.

Siding in-home sales consultant

Owner, siding and windows company · Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN

A siding company's owner was running every estimate himself, and homeowners were waiting more than a week for a price.

We headhunted a one-call-close consultant with 6 years selling siding and windows at a regional exterior company, with a low cancel rate on his statements.

He was running his own appointments by week three, and estimate wait times dropped to a few days.

FAQ

Hiring siding sales reps: questions owners ask.

  • Do siding salespeople need a license?

Depends on the state. Maryland runs a salesperson exam for home improvement sellers (35 questions, 70% to pass), and Connecticut requires home improvement salespeople to register (Registration required). Check your state's rules; we don't give legal advice.

  • One-call close or measure and come back?

Either works, and it changes who you hire. A one-call rep has to run a full presentation, measure accurately, handle the price conversation and leave with a signed contract, without leaning on pressure. If you measure first and return with a price, you need someone patient and organized on follow-up. Tell us which model you run and we'll find reps who already sell that way.

  • What commission do siding reps earn?

Home improvement commissions typically run 6-12% of the sale of the sale (Pro Remodeler, 2018). Where you land depends on lead quality, who pays for marketing and whether you offer a base or a draw.

  • Can you find reps who also sell windows or roofing?

Tell us your full product mix and we'll look for reps whose history matches it. A rep who has sold the products you sell ramps faster than one learning all of them at once.

  • How do cancels affect what a siding rep earns?

Sales signed at the homeowner's home can usually be cancelled within 3 business days under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule. If you pay commission before that window closes, decide up front whether cancels get charged back, and put it in the offer letter.

  • How fast can you fill a siding sales seat?

We aim to have a first candidate in front of you within 7 days of onboarding and getting your job description. A typical hire takes 21 days. Both vary by role and market, and on whether you need one-call experience.

Get a closer on your siding estimates.

Tell us how you sell, one call or measure and return, and how you pay. We'll headhunt reps with a track record in exterior sales at the strongest companies in your market, check their close rate, pay history and references, and introduce you to the ones who'll sign more of your estimates.
