In-home consultant pay

How much do in-home sales consultants make?

In-home consultants sell windows, doors and siding, often on a one-call close. BLS spreads their employers across several industries, so we show all of them.

The data

Three industries, one job.

BLS doesn't separate window, door and siding sellers from everyone else these firms employ. Here is each industry they can fall under, plus the vendor data on deals and close rates.

Light band: 10th to 90th percentile. Dark band: 25th to 75th. Dot: median. Annual wages for W-2 employees, commission included.

None of these industries is window and siding sales alone. The gaps between them are a reminder that a BLS median describes an industry, not a job. The building finishing mean is $76,730.

BLS covers W-2 employees only. Reps paid as 1099 contractors are not in any of these bars.

Reading the numbers

Why one consultant's number isn't another's.

  • W-2 vs 1099

BLS counts consultants on a company payroll. A consultant working as an independent contractor or dealer on a 1099 is in none of these medians.

  • Advertised vs earned

One-call-close companies recruit on earning potential. That figure assumes a full calendar of issued leads and a strong close rate. Ask what the median consultant on the team made last year.

  • Base vs total

Income can be quoted as base, base plus commission, or gross commission before cancels and finance rejections come back. Those can be far apart. Ask which one you're looking at.

  • Two commission ranges

Pro Remodeler put home improvement commission at 6-12% of the sale in 2018. Remodelers Advantage puts remodeling work at about 3-6% of sold revenue. The gap likely reflects different businesses: product sales on a one-call close against full remodels with long sales cycles. Ask which kind of company a rate comes from.

Pay structures

How one-call-close consultants get paid.

The plans in this trade pay on what the consultant sells. The details that decide the check are the rate, the price floor and what happens on a cancel.
  • Percent of sale

The core of the plan, at 6-12% of the sale in Pro Remodeler's range. The rate depends on the company, the product, lead quality and how much sales support the consultant gets.

  • Sliding scale by price

Full rate at list, less as the price comes down. Remodelers Advantage's version pays full rate only at full price, so a consultant can't buy the sale with your margin.

  • Net of cancels

Some plans hold commission until the job clears the 3 business days cancel window under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule, or until install. Others pay at signing and claw back on a cancel.

  • Base or draw during the ramp

A new consultant may get a base or a draw against commission while their pipeline builds, then move to straight commission.

Run any of these plans at your own ticket, close rate and lead count before you put it in an offer.

What drives earnings

What a consultant can and can't control.

  • 01

    Lead mix

Issued leads, not set appointments, are what a consultant can sell. Ask about the demo rate: how many appointments end with a full presentation in front of every decision maker.

  • 02

    Average ticket

Siro's median windows and doors deal is $7,538. Whole-house jobs and premium lines raise it; a single replacement window drags it down.

  • 03

    Close rate

Windows and doors posted the highest close rate in Siro's sample, 29.1% against 26.9% nationally. Moving a bottom-quartile rep up to the median is worth about $761 per appointment.

  • 04

    Net sales and margin

Cancels and finance rejections come straight off the top. Net sales per lead is the number that tracks pay, and the cancel rate is the one to ask about.

For owners and for reps

For owners

The offer that pulls a proven one-call closer

Experienced consultants judge an offer by the leads. Tell them how many issued leads a week, your demo rate and who confirms appointments. Then show net sales per issued lead and what your plan pays on it.

Be clear about cancels: when commission is earned and what comes back if a job falls through. A consultant who has been burned by chargebacks will ask first. Pay on the day you promised, every time. Late or short commission checks lose good consultants faster than anything else.

For reps

What to ask before you move

Ask for the demo rate and the cancel rate as well as the close rate. A high close rate with heavy cancels pays less than it looks.

Then apply as a rep. It's free. We check close rate, pay history and references up front, so companies see your real record from the start.

Methodology

How we built this page.

  • BLS has no in-home consultant code, and window, door and siding companies don't share one industry. Siding firms sit with exterior contractors (NAICS 2381), window and door installers can be classed as building finishing contractors (NAICS 2383), and full-line remodelers fall under residential building (NAICS 2361). We show sales representatives of services (SOC 41-3091) in all three.
  • BLS figures are from the May 2025 OEWS release, checked on 20 Oct 2026. W-2 employees only, commission included.
  • Siro's figures come from its own recorded appointments, and Siro counts a close when a visit advanced toward a sale. It treats gaps of about two points as noise.

FAQ

Common questions about this pay.

  • How much do window sales consultants make?

BLS doesn't track them by name. W-2 sales reps at exterior contractors earned a median of $69,990 in May 2025, and at building finishing contractors $64,990. Both figures include commission for W-2 reps.

  • What commission do window and siding reps earn?

Pro Remodeler put home improvement commission at 6-12% of the sale in 2018, depending on company, product, lead quality and support. Remodelers Advantage puts remodeling work lower, at about 3-6% of sold revenue.

  • What's a good close rate for in-home window sales?

In Siro's 2026 sample, windows and doors closed at 29.1%, the highest of any trade, against 26.9% nationally. Siro counts a visit as a close when it advanced toward a sale, so ask how any close rate you're quoted is calculated.

  • Do consultants get paid on cancelled jobs?

It depends on the plan. Ask whether commission is earned at signing, after the cancel window or at install, and whether a cancel claws it back. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule gives buyers 3 business days to cancel most sales made in the home.

  • Which pay plans drive good consultants away?

In our experience: complicated clawbacks, commission paid months after install, caps on earnings and plans that change after the consultant starts. The plans that attract strong closers are simple enough to check, pay on time and come with enough issued leads to earn.
