Sales pay data

What home service salespeople earn, by role.

Government wage data for every in-home sales role we recruit for, side by side, with the caveats that matter. Use it to build an offer that wins the reps who'll grow your sales. Each role page shows where every figure comes from.

By role

Every role, its closest BLS series, and the range.

BLS publishes pay by occupation and industry, not by job title. Each row is the closest match we could find for the role, and each role has its own page with every other source we checked.

The in-home consultant row uses building finishing contractors, where window and door installers can be classed; siding and roofing sit with exterior contractors, and that page shows both. Commission is included for W-2 reps. 1099 reps are not in any row.

Before you use these

Four things to know before you quote a number.

  • 01

    BLS only sees payroll

These are W-2 figures. Reps paid as 1099 contractors aren't in them at all. In roofing that is shifting: 93% of sales leaders in Leap's survey said they had moved reps to W-2.

  • 02

    A median describes an industry

BLS has no comfort advisor or design consultant code. We match each role to the closest occupation and industry, and every page says which one it uses.

  • 03

Postings and targets are not pay

A posting is what an employer advertised. A ServiceTitan figure is a target. We label both, so neither gets mistaken for an average.

  • 04

    Commission is in the wages

OEWS counts commission and production bonuses as wages, so BLS medians are total pay for W-2 reps. A quoted base salary is only the floor.

Methodology

Where these numbers come from.

  • BLS figures are from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) release, read from the BLS data series by occupation and industry and checked on 20 Oct 2026.
  • Vendor, survey, posting and target figures come from pages we opened and read ourselves. Salary sites that blocked a direct check are left out unless another source quotes them, and then we say so.
  • Each role page's source table labels every figure with what kind of number it is and links to its source.

FAQ

Questions about this data.

  • Which home services sales role pays the most?

Among W-2 sales reps, HVAC, plumbing and electrical contractors had the highest median we track, $78,170 in May 2025. Sales managers earn more: $126,760 at specialty trade contractors.

  • Do these numbers include 1099 reps?

No. BLS's wage survey leaves out the self-employed, so commission reps paid as contractors are missing. That is the main gap in public pay data for in-home sales.

  • Why don't you use ZipRecruiter or Glassdoor?

Their pages blocked a direct check when we built these pages, and we only publish figures we could open and read ourselves. Where another source quotes them, we say so.

  • What pay plan attracts the best reps?

From what we see placing reps: a clear plan they can calculate themselves, commission paid on time, and enough good leads to earn. A competitive rate, a draw or base for the first months and SPIFFs on the products you want sold all help. Caps, complicated clawbacks and plans that change after the start date push good reps away.

  • Should a first sales hire be commission-only?

We usually recommend a base or a draw for the first two to three months, then a move to commission. A new rep with no cushion tends to discount to close deals, and you end up with underpriced jobs. A base buys you a rep who follows your pricing while they learn your leads.

  • How often is this data updated?

BLS publishes OEWS wage estimates once a year. Each figure on these pages shows the date we last checked it.
