About the role

[Company name] is a [residential HVAC / HVAC and plumbing] company serving [service area]. We're hiring a comfort advisor to run in-home replacement appointments from our service technicians, our marketing and your own follow-up. You'll find out what the homeowner needs, present good/better/best options with financing, and close on the first visit when it's right for the customer.

What you'll do

  • Run [2-3] in-home sales appointments a day from tech-generated leads, marketed leads and your own rehash
  • Assess the home: equipment age and condition, ductwork, comfort complaints, utility bills
  • Present good/better/best system options with clear pricing and financing
  • Close on the first visit where it fits, and follow up on every open estimate within [48 hours]
  • Work the handoff with service technicians so tech leads get set and run fast
  • Hand sold jobs to install with complete paperwork: equipment, add-ons, permits, financing
  • Log every lead, result and follow-up in [your field software]
  • Join the weekly sales meeting and ride-alongs with the sales manager

What success looks like

  • Average replacement ticket of [$X]
  • Annual sales of [$X], or gross profit per day of [$X]
  • Cancel rate under [X]%
  • Every unsold estimate followed up within [X] days

What you bring

  • [2+] years selling in the home: HVAC replacement, or another one-call-close trade such as roofing, windows, bath or solar
  • A close-rate history you can show, split by lead source
  • Commission statements or W-2s that back up your sales numbers
  • Comfortable explaining financing and walking a homeowner through three options
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record and [a reliable vehicle / ability to drive a company vehicle]
  • Available for [evening appointments / one Saturday a month] when homeowners are home

Nice to have

  • A technical HVAC background: a former technician who wants to sell
  • Experience selling [heat pumps / indoor air quality / water heaters]
  • Experience with tablet-based presentations and [your field software]

Pay

  • [Training wage of $X] for the first [90 days], then [X]% commission on sales or [X]% of gross profit
  • Commission paid [at install / at collection], [weekly / every two weeks]
  • SPIFFs on [maintenance agreements / indoor air quality / add-ons]
  • [Draw against commission of $X, recoverable / non-recoverable]
  • Benefits: [health, dental, retirement plan, paid time off]
  • Realistic first-year earnings: [$X-$Y], based on what advisors in this seat actually earned last year

Schedule and territory

  • [Monday-Friday], with [evening appointments / one Saturday a month]
  • Territory: [area], appointments up to [X] miles from [shop]
  • [Company vehicle / gas card / mileage at $X a mile]

How to apply

Apply at [link] or text [number]. Include your close rate by lead source and what you sold in the last 12 months.

Writing the ad

Make it pull closers, not just applicants.

Proven sellers read a job ad the way they read a lead sheet. These are the lines they look for.
  1. 01

    Lead with the lead source

Say how many issued appointments a week an advisor runs and what share come from your techs. ServiceTitan's target close rate on tech leads is 75-85%, so a seat fed by a busy service department is worth saying out loud.

  2. 02

Publish real earnings, not a ceiling

Skip the no-ceiling pitch. Give the range your current advisors actually earned. For reference, ServiceTitan's targets are $1.5M+ in annual sales at 9% commission. Say where your seat sits against that.

  3. 03

    Say when commission pays

At install or at collection, weekly or monthly. Advisors who've waited on late commission before will look for this line first, and a promise to pay on time, every time, is one of the strongest lines you can write.

  4. 04

Name the equipment and the ticket

The brands you install, your typical system mix and your average ticket. ServiceTitan's target replacement ticket is $7,700+, and it swings a lot by market.

  5. 05

Ask for numbers in the application

Close rate by lead source and last-12-month sales. Proven sellers have these numbers ready, so they stand out from the first read.

Before you make an offer, ask for commission statements or W-2s, and run your own ride-along or role-play. Those are your checks, as the employer. When Level fills a seat, we verify close-rate history and pay history and check references before you meet anyone.

Licensing and compliance

Rules worth knowing before you post.

Only rules we could check at the source are listed. This isn't legal advice; check the rules where you sell.
  • EPA Section 608 scope: Refrigerant handlers only. A comfort advisor who only sells appears not to need it. That's our reading of EPA's scope, not legal advice. Require it only if the seat also handles refrigerant.
  • In-home sales fall under the FTC Cooling-Off Rule: the buyer has 3 business days to cancel. Build the cancellation notice into your contract paperwork and train reps on it.

FAQ

Hiring an HVAC comfort advisor: common questions.

  • What's the difference between a comfort advisor and an HVAC service technician?

A technician diagnoses and repairs. A comfort advisor runs the sales appointment for a system replacement, often from a lead the technician turned up. Some companies promote technicians into the seat; this template works for either.

  • Should a comfort advisor job ad list pay?

Yes. A plan an advisor can check for themselves is one of the main things that draws strong sellers. List the structure and a realistic first-year range from what your advisors actually earned. For context, the BLS median for sales reps at HVAC, plumbing and electrical contractors is $78,170, and BLS leaves out 1099 reps.

  • Does a comfort advisor need EPA 608 certification?

EPA Section 608 covers people who maintain, service, repair or dispose of refrigerant equipment. A comfort advisor who only sells appears not to be covered. That's our reading of EPA's scope, not legal advice.

Rather not post it yourself?
