Canvasser

A canvasser knocks doors to book inspections and estimates for a home service company's closers, in roofing, siding and windows.

They don't sell the job. They sell the appointment: a minute or two at the door that ends with a time on the calendar. On storm work, they're often the first person a homeowner meets after the hail.

Trades that hire canvassers

A day in the job

A shift at the door

Canvassing runs on timing and territory. An illustrative shift:
  1. Afternoon start

Doors work when people are home: late afternoons, evenings and weekends.

  2. The territory

Works a mapped neighborhood, often one a closer just sold in or one a storm just hit.

  3. At the door

Opens fast, points to something real, the crew next door or hail marks on the gutters, and books a time.

  4. The handoff

Logs the appointment with notes the closer can use: who'll be home, what they're worried about.

  5. Next day

Checks which appointments sat and which turned into sales, and goes back to the streets that worked.

Scorecard

The canvasser scorecard

Count appointments that sat, not doors knocked. Ten bookings nobody is home for don't help your closers; appointments that sit are what pay for the program.
  • Pay history

Statements that show what they were paid per appointment and per sale. They tell you how many of their appointments became jobs.

    Verified by Level

  • Appointments set per shift

Useful only next to the sit rate.

    You check

  • Sit rate

Share of booked appointments where the closer actually got in.

    You check

  • Appointments that became sales

The number that pays for the program.

    You check

  • Shifts worked

Door-knocking burns people out. Consistency over a season matters more than one big week.

    You check

Level verifies pay history and runs reference checks before you meet a candidate. Close rate belongs to the closers they book for. Everything marked “You check” is yours to ask about.

Rules to know

Check your city's solicitor permit rules before a crew goes out. In Florida, §489.147 limits roof-claim solicitation and bans inducements such as gift cards and deductible waivers. Fines: Up to $10,000 per violation.

Pay models

How canvassers are paid

Canvasser pay leans on results. BLS counts only 2,760 door-to-door workers on W-2 payrolls nationally, so its wage figures say little about 1099 canvassers.
  • Per appointment plus per sale

One roofing posting advertised $50 per appointment + $150 per sale. A single posting, so treat it as one example, not a norm.

  • Hourly plus bonus

Steadier pay that helps you hire people new to the door. Tie the bonus to appointments that sit, not appointments set.

  • A path to closing

Not a pay model, but it keeps good knockers. Spell out what it takes to start running inspections.

Our view

What makes a canvasser worth keeping

A great canvasser fills your closers' calendars with appointments that sit. That's what turns door-knocking into revenue.
  • Appointments that sit

Bookings only make money when the closer gets in the door. Pay and praise the appointments that sit, not the ones that were set.

  • Something real at the door

The best openers point to something the homeowner can see, like the crew next door or hail marks on the gutters, then book a time.

  • Pay on time, every time

Late or short pay loses good people fast. A clear plan paid on schedule keeps your best canvassers out on the streets.

  • A path to closing

Spell out what it takes to start running inspections. It keeps ambitious canvassers with you.

How Level vets

What we verify on canvassers.

  1. 01

Pay history, from statements of what they were paid per appointment and per sale. Close rate belongs to the closer, so we don't claim it for canvassers.

  2. 02

Reference checks. We confirm the history and track record a candidate gives us with their references, before you meet them.

Their door is yours to see. Walk a street with them before you hire.

Yours to run

  • The interview
  • A ride-along
  • A role-play

Level doesn’t run these. The tips further down are what we’d look for.

Candidate pools

Where good canvassers come from

Door-knocking rewards hustle more than experience. Plan for turnover: one vendor's rule of thumb for door-to-door teams is Hire 20, keep 8.
  • Storm-team canvassers

They know the pitch and the neighborhoods after a hail event. Check their sit rate, not just their bookings.

  • Our read

    Solar door-knockers

Solar setters already know the door. The solar slowdown has put some on the market.

  • Our read

    Retail and hospitality workers

People used to talking to strangers all day. Pay them steadily while they learn.

“Our read” marks our own judgment from the market, not sourced data.

Level starts where the track records are. The best reps are usually employed and doing well, so they aren’t scrolling job boards. We headhunt top performers at the strongest companies in your trade and market, and show them why your seat is a better move. The other pools are worth knowing if you’re hiring yourself.

Interview tips

Interviewing a canvasser

We check pay history and references before you meet them. The interview that tells you most happens outside.
  1. 01

    Do it at a door

Skip the office interview. Walk a street with them for an hour and watch how they open.

  2. 02

    Ask for set and sat

Appointments set and appointments that sat, last month. The best canvassers track both, because the second one is what their closers live on.

  3. 03

    Check they know the rules

Your city's solicitor permit rules, and on storm work in Florida, §489.147's limits on claim solicitation and inducements.

  4. 04

    Pair them with a closer

Their first week, let a closer give feedback on the appointments they booked.

This is our advice for your own hiring process. Level doesn’t run interviews, ride-alongs or role-plays.

A real track record, or a good interview?

Salespeople are good at interviews. It’s part of the job. Here’s how we’d tell the difference in your seat.

Specifics, not adjectives

A real canvasser knows last month in numbers: appointments set, appointments that sat, and how many turned into sales. Someone who mainly interviews well tells you how much they love people.

Listen for

  • Whether they know their sit rate, not just their bookings.
  • How quickly and naturally they get to the point at the door.
  • Whether they know your city's solicitor permit rules.

Red flags

  • Only the number of appointments set, never how many sat.
  • Pay that doesn't line up with what they say they booked. We check pay history for you before you meet them.
  • A pitch that leans on pressure, or on promises about the insurance claim.
  • A string of short stints, each with a story that blames the company.

FAQ

Questions about hiring canvassers.

  • What does a canvasser do?

A canvasser knocks doors to book inspections or estimates for a home service company's closers. They sell the appointment, not the job.

  • How are canvassers paid?

Pay is tied to results: per appointment, per sale, or hourly plus a bonus. One roofing posting advertised $50 per appointment + $150 per sale, but that's a single example. BLS puts the median for door-to-door sales workers at $41,380, counting W-2 workers only.

  • Are canvassers W-2 or 1099?

Both exist; decide with your accountant. BLS counts only 2,760 door-to-door workers on W-2 payrolls nationally, which fits with most being 1099. That reading is our inference.

  • Are there rules on door-knocking for roofing?

Yes. Check your city's solicitor permit rules before a crew goes out. In Florida, §489.147 limits roof-claim solicitation and bans inducements like deductible waivers. Fines: Up to $10,000 per violation.

  • How does Level check a canvasser?

We verify pay history before you meet them, what they were paid per appointment and per sale, and check references. Close-rate history applies to closers, so we don't claim it for canvassers.
