Design consultant pay

How much do bath and kitchen design consultants make?

Design consultants design, price and close bath and kitchen remodels at the homeowner's table. Their pay rides on bigger tickets than window and door sellers see, and a ramp that can take months.

Reading the numbers

Why the posting and the median are so far apart.

  • W-2 vs 1099

BLS covers employees only. A bath franchise or remodeler that pays its consultants as 1099 contractors doesn't show up in the $64,150 median.

  • Advertised vs earned

The Bath Planet posting lists $100k/yr + commission + bonus. It doesn't say how much of that is guaranteed, and a plus-commission-plus-bonus figure describes a full calendar, not a promise.

  • Base vs total

BLS counts commission as wages, so its median is total pay for W-2 reps. A posted base is only the floor. Compare total with total.

  • First year vs steady state

A new remodeling salesperson typically makes first sales in 3-6 months and reaches full productivity in 6-12 months, per Remodelers Advantage. First-year pay usually trails what the same person earns once their pipeline is full.

Pay structures

How bath and kitchen companies pay designers who sell.

Bath and kitchen plans pay on what the consultant sells. The better ones protect margin and pay out as the homeowner pays.
  • Base plus commission

Remodelers Advantage's pick for a first hire: base plus commission. The base carries the consultant through a long sales cycle; commission pays for results.

  • Percent of sale

Remodelers Advantage puts remodeling commission at about 3-6% of sold revenue. One-call bath companies may pay a different rate on a different ticket, so compare like with like.

  • Sliding scale

Commission pays full rate only at full price and drops when the price does, so a consultant can't give away your margin to close.

  • Paid on milestones

Remodelers Advantage's advice: tie commission to the project's payment milestones, such as the deposit and completion, so the consultant is paid roughly as you get paid.

Run any of these plans at your own ticket, close rate and lead count before you put it in an offer.

What drives earnings

Where a design consultant's pay comes from.

  • 01

    Lead mix

Company leads from TV, home shows and online ads behave differently from referrals and past customers. Ask which leads a consultant is issued, and how many a week.

  • 02

    Average ticket

Siro's median kitchen and bath deal is $15,000. A kitchen runs bigger than a tub-to-shower conversion, so the product mix sets the ceiling.

  • 03

    Close rate

Closing a bottom rep's gap to the median rep is worth about $1,290 per appointment in Siro's data. On a percent-of-sale plan, the consultant keeps their share of that.

  • 04

    Gross profit and change orders

Design changes after signing can raise the ticket or eat the margin. Plans that pay on the final contract, not the first signature, keep the consultant honest about scope.

For owners and for reps

For owners

The offer that pulls a proven design consultant

Strong design consultants want to know the leads are real and the install team won't cost them the sale. Say how many company leads a week, what design support they get and how commission handles change orders.

Budget for the ramp. First sales in 3-6 months is normal, per Remodelers Advantage, so a base or draw through that stretch is what keeps a good hire. It also keeps a new consultant selling at your prices instead of discounting to get the first deals through.

For reps

What to ask before you move

Ask how many appointments are company-issued, the average sold ticket, and how commission is paid on a job that changes after signing.

We check close rate, pay history and references before a company meets you. It's free for reps. Apply as a rep and tell us which products you sell best.

Methodology

How we built this page.

  • BLS has no design consultant code. We use sales representatives of services (SOC 41-3091) at residential building construction firms (NAICS 2361), the industry remodelers fall under. It also includes new-home builders.
  • BLS figures are from the May 2025 OEWS release, checked on 20 Oct 2026. W-2 employees only, commission included.
  • We dropped bath pay figures from postings we could no longer open. The Bath Planet posting is the one we could check.
  • Siro's deal sizes come from its own recorded appointments. They are vendor data, labelled as such.

FAQ

Common questions about this pay.

  • How much does a bath design consultant make?

BLS's closest series, W-2 sales reps at residential building and remodeling firms, shows a median of $64,150 and a 90th percentile of $143,230 for May 2025. One-call bath brands advertise more, such as $100k/yr + commission + bonus at one Bath Planet location.

  • Are design consultant jobs commission only?

Some are; others pay a base. The Bath Planet posting lists a yearly figure plus commission and bonus, and Remodelers Advantage recommends base plus commission for a first hire.

  • How long until a new design consultant earns full pay?

Remodelers Advantage says a new remodeling salesperson typically makes first sales in 3-6 months and reaches full productivity in 6-12 months.

  • Why do kitchen and bath reps earn more per sale than window reps?

The tickets are bigger. Siro's median kitchen and bath deal is $15,000 against $7,538 for windows and doors, so the same commission rate pays more per sale.
